SEED STORAGE
Jasmin Hill
There are many different ways to store your seeds, here at the Seed Savers Library I store our seeds in glass jars. I have found jars a fantastic way of storing seeds especially as I am in and out of them all the time, sending them out to you all. The Library is kept in a cool dark corner, because I have a high turnover of these seeds I am not too concerned about keeping them chilled.
My first collection was in a photo album, it was fun but the album got so fat I couldn't close it.
My second collection of seeds was kept in their packets in Tupperware tucked in the back of my fridge, I found this worked really well and kept the seeds at a constant cool temperature which helps seeds last a bit longer.
I soon grew out of two Tupperware containers and my collection has grown and spread across most of my house! Now I try to share as many as I can, the more we grow.. the more we save.. the more we share.. the more we all have for years to come.

I keep my seeds in the fridge. I have bulk overflow of large seeds like beans and corn in jars in a dark cool cupboard but have a copy chilled as well. The top shelf is seeds only each container has dry rice or dry crystal packs to absorb any moisture. If you chill seeds let them get to room temperature before opening the container as the sudden change in temperature can cause condensation (moisture) this is bad for seeds as you want cold and dry.

I use old glass jars from spices etc. Color coded by family. I generally only keep seed for 1 or 2 years so I am not too worried about keeping my seeds chilled. |
