Hollyhocks are biennial flowers - if you plant them autumn, they could flower the next summer, but if you plant them spring, they'll only flower the next spring. New plants "daughter plants" come up from the same rootstock, so don't pull it out, it continues to grow where you leave it. Also propagates easily from seeds. Hollyhock flowers are edible, and the plant is medicinal, similarly to Althea officinalis (Marshmallow) to which it is closely related.  Apparently they cross, although I've had my seed come true to type even when growing different colours together

Related to white yarrow, just flowering in terracotta orange fading to a light lemony yellow when it ages. Spreads about 1m, height in flower about 80cm. Lovely ferny grey-green foliage. Does not spread as wildly as white (weedy) paddock yarrow. It is mainly white yarrow that is used medicinally, so this one is just a "pretty". Good insectary plant. Leaves are good for compost too - activates and adds nutrients. Very good cut flower.
